Lighting is one of the most important design considerations that can be made during a kitchen renovation. Furthermore, the implementation of islands in the kitchen has enhanced and increased the availability of usable space and functionality in the kitchen. However, no matter how dynamic your kitchen’s island may be, without the proper lighting, it won’t shine as brightly as it should. Let’s take a closer look at how you can get the most of your kitchen with the best lighting

What Size of Lights Should Be Used Over a Kitchen Island?

Pendant lights are both fashionable and functional when it comes to kitchen illumination. This is especially true for lighting over an island. In order to determine the correct size of pendant lights, you’ll need to measure the width of your island, then subtract 12 from that calculation. With this formula, you’ll have the ideal maximum diameter, in inches, for your lights. As far as minimum width goes, too big is better than too small. Small fixtures with a large island can seem out of place, whereas a potentially oversized lighting platform can become a statement piece.

How Many Lights Should Be Installed Over a Kitchen Island?

The total number of pendant lights depends on the size of your island. Typically, an odd number of lights is more visually appealing and effective for ample illumination. Ideally, three pendant lights can amply and adequately provide light for the surface area of an island. The key is determining how many pendant lights will provide enough useful light for the area.

How High and Far Apart Should Kitchen Lights be Hung?

In order to adequately cover the island’s surface with light, each pendant needs to be strategically placed. The perimeter lights should be within six inches of the edge of the island. Each subsequent light should be 30” to 32” apart. The height of the lights depends on a few variables. Another benefit of pendant lights is that their height can be adjusted. So, based on the height of your kitchen ceiling, and the heights of those in your family, your kitchen island lights can be customized to comfortably fit your space.
