Home Renovation Planning in Baton Rouge: The Importance of Lighting Design

One of the most important, yet often overlooked, elements in a home or room renovation is lighting. Lighting design plays a critical role in not only the look and feel of a space but also its functionality. Proper lighting techniques and platforms can completely transform the atmosphere of a room, accentuating other design features. However, each room is different. From the placement to the intensity to the color, all of these variables influence the way we experience a room. The lighting needs of the kitchen vary from that of a bedroom. Other spaces need to be able to provide appropriate lighting for varying activities and functions. Here is what you should know about lighting design as a part of your home’s renovation.

Selecting the Right Kitchen Lighting

Your kitchen is a busy place, and it should demand adequate, high-performing illumination. Task lighting is one beneficial option for a kitchen island. This type of lighting makes cutting and preparing food much easier. Pendant lights are an example of task lights. Undercabinet lighting is also an excellent option. Be sure to go with a diffused source to avoid the glare from shiny countertops.

Bathroom Lighting Options

Your day likely begins and ends in the bathroom. It’s where you prepare for the day ahead. Improved lighting design here can completely enhance the way your bathroom looks and feels. A common lighting mistake is positioning a light source over the vanity’s mirror as this creates shadows and glares. To correctly light your vanity area, use sconces on either side of the mirror at eye level. For safety and comfort, undercabinet lighting can be included to make navigating your bathroom in the dark, or at night much easier. Accent lighting over the tub is another way to add ambiance.

Ideal Living Room Lighting

Your living room is a versatile area that hosts an array of different activities. From relaxing and watching TV to entertaining and everything in between, it can pose some challenges when it comes to sufficient lighting. Like your kitchen, task lighting is beneficial in this space. Lamps specifically work well in living rooms. If you opt for an overhead light source, make sure that it is dimmable, this allows you to control the amount of illumination you need or don’t need, at any given time.

Choosing the Best Bedroom Lighting

Many bedrooms are limited to a single overhead light source. An inviting, warm atmosphere can be created with many different light options. Pendant lights and sconces on each side of the bed, as well as tableside lamps, can enhance your overhead light fixture, creating symmetrical lighting throughout the room.
