Redesigning and renovating your kitchen is an exciting endeavor. After all of the planning and work it is critical that your new space not only looks great but also functions well. Some of the most important aspects of a kitchen update go beyond the aesthetics of countertops and color schemes, they determine how much comfort, organization, and performance. Here are a few things that should be strongly considered and applied in your kitchen’s new design.
Vertical space can provide valuable storage, especially in smaller kitchens. Installing overhead cabinets or open shelves creates more room for storage. It is important to have the cabinets and shelves reach all the way to the ceiling instead of leaving unusable space at the top. Mixing open shelving with closed cabinetry is another to add visual interest and usable storage to a kitchen.
The “work triangle” in the kitchen is the route that connects the refrigerator, sink, and stove/oven. This connection is critical for easy and safe workflow throughout the space. In order to make the triangle as efficient as possible, the distance between each point should be between 4 and 9 feet, depending on the size of your kitchen. This amount of space allows you to clean, cook, and store items easily and safely. If possible, no other traffic areas should intersect with this space.
In addition to this work area triangle, your kitchen’s design, no matter its size, should prioritize circulation. Circulation allows for easy movement and avoids the feeling of being overcrowded. Kitchens in south Louisiana are a popular gathering spot in the home, and they should be accommodating. A simple rule of thumb is to maintain at least 4 feet of space between countertops and any island, or other objects in the kitchen that obstruct movement or flow.
Your kitchen is a busy place, and it should demand adequate, high-performing kitchen illumination. Task lighting is one beneficial option for a kitchen island. This type of lighting makes cutting and preparing food much easier. Pendant lights are an example of task lights. Undercabinet lighting is also an excellent option. Be sure to go with a diffused source to avoid the glare from shiny countertops.
If the time has come to update or upgrade your kitchen these are a few important things to keep in mind. The most important step to take is to hire an experienced team of designers that bring the kitchen of your dreams to life. For over 40 years
